But when his client turns up dead...
Ty Buchanan has fallen from a high-powered law firm to dispensing legal advice from a coffee bar. One of his first clients is a mysterious woman who arrives with her six-year-old daughter. They are being illegally evicted from a downtown transient hotel, an interest that is being handled by Ty’s old law firm and former best friend.
But Ty isn’t backing down. He’ll fight for this woman’s rights...and then she turns up dead.
Determined to find the killer, and protect the little girl, Ty must depend on his legal skills and street smarts both, before somebody shuts him up for good.
From the mansions and yachts of the rich and famous, to the underbelly of the mean streets of L.A., Try Darkness is another riveting thriller where the suspense never rests.

Try Darkness Ty Buchanan Legal Thriller #2 edition by James Scott Bell Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks
I'm usually not a fan of legal thrillers, but John Grisham and James Scott Bell are turning me in favor of them. Try Darkness was a memorable ride for me through many parts of California familiar to me from when I worked in LA. Ty Buchanan is flawed, vulnerable, and smart-mouthed, but he's genuinely resourceful and courageous when pressed to resolve a bad situation. His rhino exterior is penetrated by his empathy with the innocent that he encounters. At his core, he's a pushover for the downtrodden, a hero for the underdogs littering his world. Ty maintains a serious tack while sprinkling in his irresistible penchant for humor throughout. Who could ask for a better MC than that.I've read Bell's books on writing, just about all of them, and find him quite informative and fun to read. As a thriller novelist myself, I like that he can write worthy books as well as teach his craft. I'll read more of his work. Keep 'em coming.

Try Darkness Ty Buchanan Legal Thriller #2 edition by James Scott Bell Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
I really enjoyed this book. Liked Ty very much, and Sister Mary.
Really good read. Can't wait to start the 3rd one
The storyline is never dull but what sets this book apart is the development of the characters - really unusual twist has Ty Buchanan living on site of a Benedictine Abbey. Helped by the Abbey's priest and a young nun, both to find a killer as well as in a spiritual sense, the interaction between these three characters was a highlight of the book. I literally couldn't put it down!
I love this author......have read multiple books written by him and have never been disappointed. Try Darkness is no exception! Love the seriousness along with the witty banter.........great story line, characters and unexpected ending. Try Darkness......you won't be disappointed either!
Ty Buchannan obviously likes poking his finger at the large corporate lawyers, of which years before he was a part of that rat race. Loved the characters eg the owner of the Sip coffee shop, the Priest, and Sister Mary. Sister Mary sounds like a great dame and makes Buchannan sit up and take notice. Loved Buchannan's quick whit, and how he was able to bring down the large corporate Lawyers when in Court fighting a case with his knowledge of the Law.( send me more of his).
Rogue attorney at law, Ty Buchanan continues his exile from the big law firm. Having lost the love of his life, his home, and falsely accused of murder, Ty finds shelter with a disgraced Priest. With no desire to get back in the trenches of high octane law, Ty finds small peace in offering legal services to those who can't afford to pay. His unlikely alliance with a young, attractive nun can be a distraction. He wants to do the right thing.
This is the second of 3 in the series. A good read.
I've read most of Mr. Bell's potboilers and his Ty Buchanan series seems to incorporate the best of his writing. He develops Buchanan's character and the other principal players' characters to an extent that lets you care about them. Unlike most of his contemporaries, Mr. Bell understands the English language and doesn't trip over what nowadays are almost universal small but annoyingly ignorant errors such as substituting "lay" for "lie." In this series he subdues the usual fundamentalist Christian proselytizing and pretty much limits it to discussions between Ty and a Roman priest, a much more effective approach than the simplistic and off-putting blatancy contained in his other novels.
I am voracious reader of mystery & legal thrillers. Some of my favorite characters are Michael Connely's Harry Bosxh, Robert Crais' Elvis Cole & David Rosenfelt's Andy Carpenter. I thankfully came across James Scott Bell's novel Try Dying as a recommended book for me based on my other choices last week. I very quickly became end lured with Ty Buchanan, the main character. Part lawyer, part PI, he is a complex man who is easy to identify with & has a great passion for all he believes in. Great story lines & interesting secondary characters will keep you burning the midnight oil as you won't want to put down any one of the books in this Ty Buchanan series. I order Try Darkness as so on as I finished Try Dying & am now reading Try Fear. I am looking forward to reading James Scott Bell's other books as well because he is an author who develops characters that you wish you could actually meet & story lines that grab you & keep you interested from page one!
